“HLA Go Away” was pretty much the sentiment of last nights Department of Education public hearing. The hearing is to decided if The Hebrew Language Charter Academy will be housed in I.S. 278 The purpose of the meeting, which is mandated by state law, is to provide a forum to make community voices heard before a charter school opens. A decision cannot be officially made final until this hearing was held.

Acadia Realty, a partner in the enormous Sheepshead Bay Station Plaza development adjacent to the train station platform, has posted floor plans of the mega-establishment on its website. The plans reveal a 16-story residential tower perched on top of four floors of retail, a one-story parking deck and a floor of office space. If the plans become a reality, the 22-story Sheepshead Bay Station Plaza will stand far taller than any other building in the area, with the Sheepshead Bay train station platform nestled in its shadow. Here's an opportunity for members & residents to volunteer and help our local environment! During late spring and early summer, "love is in the air" for area horseshoe crabs. This year, the Park Department, NYC Audubon Society and Cornell are looking for volunteers to survey spawning horseshoe crabs at high tide on evening around the new moon and full moon from now untl early July. Surveys take approximately two hours. The SB/PBCA was recently contacted by Ellen Hartig, Project Mgr. of the Natural Resources Group of NYC Parks to specifically ask for our members to volunteer: "It would be great to have the Plumb Beach Civic Association involved in the monitoring either with NYC Parks, Natural Resources Group (NRG) or with NYC Audubon (IWASH Program). There can be training as we go. NRG is planning to be at Dreier Offerman Park for a number of evenings during peak high tide. We are coordinating with NYC Audubon and Cornell, who are planning to be at Plumb Beach." Here's a tentative schedule of Dates & Start Times May 22 - 6:55 PM May 24 - 8:30 PM May 26 - 10:15 PM June 5 - 7:11 PM June 7 - 8:33 PM June 9 - 9:52 PM June 20 - 7:28 PM June 22 - 8:16 PM June 24 - 10:03 PM So come out, and enjoy an evening walk on the beach! Volunteers are asked to contact SB/PBCA through our "Contact Us" page or through email at
